Introducing the stamp set of national hero Ly Thuong Kiet (1019-1105)

Ly Thuong Kiet is a great famous General, the soul of greatest victories in the Vietnamese history in the XI century. Ly Thuong Kiet whose real name is Ngo Tuan, alias Thuong Kiet. After making dedication, granted by the imperial, graft his surname onto the alias to be Ly Thuong Kiet. He was born in 1019 during the reign of King Ly Thai To and passed away in 1105 during the reign of King Ly Nhan Tong, lived to be 86 years old.

In politics, Ly Thuong Kiet was a famous mandarin, a reliable and steady mainstay of Ly dynasty, especially under the reign of Emperor Ly Nhan Tong (1072-1127). He represented the national spirit and stuff. His name was attached with resounding victories serving the King to knock down Tong’s invasion and pacifying Chiem.

In 1072, King Ly Thanh Tong passed away. Hence, Ly Nhan Tong became King when he was only 07 years old. Always bearing wicked intention with covetous eyes, enemy from the North considered this as a good opportunity to invade our country. Ly Thuong Kiet at that time was  Lieutenant, General and Patriarch, title Thuong phu cong. He took full control both civil and military mandarins. Carrying in his shoulders a huge responsibility with the fate of our country, Ly Thuong Kiet received a sacred mission, directly organized and led the resistance against the invader army of Tong dinasty.

Using “Unexpected direct attack” plan, he proactively attacked enemy castles to counteract their strength. Plotting and skillfully applying various tactics of assaulting, surprising, strongly attacking, … Ly Thuong Kiet and his soldiers have quickly defeat a mass of enemy’s bases, forcing Tong to postpone plan to invade our country.

After that victory, Ly Thuong Kiet decided to rely on the topography of dangerous mountains and rivers, full of obstacles and difficult to access to build sea - land defense lines and chose Nhu Nguyet river as the main defensive line. Great battles on Nhu Nguyet defensive line have made an important contribution to the overall victory of Dai Viet army, repelling two “North Invasion” of Tong dynasty.

To celebrate the 1,000th of birthday of national hero Ly Thuong Kiet, the Ministry of Information and Communication officially issued a stamp set “The 1,000th birthday Anniversary of Ly Thuong Kiet (1019-1105)” consists of 01 sample. The stamp template presents the iconic national hero of Ly Thuong Kiet through his statue at the center, behind is Nhu Nguyet defensive line and the rivers and mountains of the Nam Country. The graphics are designed by drawing line, through that, expressing the indomitable spirit of the nation during the period of fighting against foreign invaders.

The stamp set’s face value is VND 4,000, 43x23mm dimension and designed by artist Pham Quang Dieu – Vietnam Post. The stamp set is provided on the postal Network from 1st April 2019 to 31st December 2020.
